In the quiet woods of Meredith, New Hampshire, a unique theatrical experience is taking root. Dan Daly, a theater designer, is crafting a one-of-a-kind performance space amidst the trees. This innovative project, titled 'Arborlogues: A Botanical Recital Performed for One Tree,' is a testament to Daly's creative vision and a departure from traditional theater settings.
Daly's journey began in the cramped confines of a strip mall, where he and his team created captivating theater with limited resources. This early experience laid the foundation for his knack for inventive design. After graduating from Pittsburgh State University, he found himself in the bustling city of New York, designing for the intimate spaces of Off-Off Broadway. Here, he honed his skills in maximizing impact within small spaces, understanding the value of every material and the art of getting the most 'bang for your buck.'
One of Daly's notable works is 'Behind the City,' an immersive play that transformed various locations in Manhattan into otherworldly settings. From apartments to alleyways, he created a magical world that captivated audiences. Another standout production was 'Tammany Hall,' set in the corrupt world of 1920s New York. The venue itself, once a clubhouse for the influential Tammany Hall organization, became an integral part of the performance, showcasing the power of site-specific theater.
However, Daly's time in New York during the pandemic left him yearning for a different kind of theater experience. He wanted to create environmentally conscious productions and found inspiration in the green spaces around him. 'If we're going to cut down the trees to make the play, why don't we do the play among the trees?' he pondered.
Thus, 'Arborlogues' was born. With a grant from The Peace Studio, Daly commissioned playwright Lee LeBreton to create a unique performance where audience members are handed a monologue to perform for a tree, shielded by a red curtain. The play explores our interconnectedness with nature, and the response has been profound. One man, grieving the loss of his father, found solace in performing for a cedar tree, a poignant reminder of his father's presence.
Daly's project has not only invigorated him but has also given birth to his company, Ofo Theatre, with a vision to downsize theater and create equitable, environmentally friendly performances. Other intriguing offerings include 'For the Birds,' a play for a flock of chimney swifts, and 'Pocket Change,' a tabletop theater experience delivered by mail.
'Arborlogues' challenges the notion that theater requires grand spaces. Daly believes that size doesn't matter when it comes to creating impactful performances. His work invites us to reconsider our relationship with nature and the potential for intimate, thought-provoking theater experiences.
